چکیده

A correlation of clinical, MRI, and neuropathological data is reported in two patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA). On MRI, patient 1 showed striatal atrophy, reduction of T2 relaxation times within most of the putamen, and a band of hyperintense signal changes in the lateral putamen. In patient 2, MRI disclosed only shortening of the T2 signal in the putamen. Immunohistochemistry showed pronounced reactive microgliosis and astrogliosis in the affected brain regions. In patient 1, the area with the most pronounced microgliosis and astrogliosis most likely correlated with the area of hyperintense signal changes on MRI. This area also contained the highest amount of ferric iron, which was increased in the putamen of patient 1 but not patient 2. It is unlikely that the hypointense signal changes in the putamen are due to an increase of iron alone. Reactive microglial and astroglial cells may play a part in the pathogenesis of MSA.

The Relationship Between Morphology of Lumbar Disc Herniation and MRI Changes in Adjacent Vertebral Bodies

Background: Intervertebral disc herniation has two common types, extrusion and protrusion, which may affect the adjacent vertebrae. In addition, it is associated with significant signal changes in T1 MRI (short TR/TE) and T2 MRI (long TR/TE).   Methods: The present study is a cross-sectional analytic one, in which sampling was performed retrospectively. Cases were randomly selected from the pa...

Teaching neuroImage: MRI in multiple system atrophy: "hot cross bun" sign and hyperintense rim bordering the putamina.

A 59-year-old man developed progressive gait ataxia, dysarthria, sexual dysfunction, and Raynaud phenomenon over 2 years. On examination he also manifested bradykinesia and rigidity, postural and action tremor of the upper limbs, and orthostatic hypotension. Family history was negative. Brain MRI disclosed the “hot cross bun” sign typical of multiple system atrophy (MSA) (figure).1,2 This sign ...

Correlation between QRS Complex Changes and Cardiac Iron Overload in Beta Thalassemia Major Patients Using T2*MRI

Background and purpose: Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a costly method to assess cardiac iron overload. The presence of fragmented QRS (fQRS) indicates changes due to iron overload in cardiac tissue. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between fQRS and cardiac iron overload using cardiac MRI in patients with β-thalassemia major (β-TM). Materials and methods: This...

EVALUATION OF PULMONARY IRON OVER LOAD IN PATIENTS WITH Β-THALASSEMIA MAJOR USING SPIROMETRY

Background & Aims: Spirometry changes in thalassemic patients can be obstructive or restrictive and pulmonary dysfunction depends on age and body iron overload. In this study the effectiveness of lung spirometry in detecting iron overload in patients with β-thalassemia was investigated. Materials & Methods: This cross-sectional (descriptive-analytic) study investigated the spirometry test resu...

Brain MRI Findings in Children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

Background: Patients with leukemia are facing more complications in order to achieve longer survival. We aimed to evaluate the frequency of central nervous system abnormalities (CNS) on MRI of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Methods: Sixty-six children with diagnosis of ALL aged 2-18 years were recruited. Non-contrast sequences of brain MRI in addition to diffusion weighted i...
